Tootie Frootie - Little Richard

Image
Tutti Frutti  Little Richard The name "Tutti Frutti" was not created with the song. Tutti Frutti is actually a type of tropical fruit ice cream. I went to a hole-in-the-wall ice cream shop and they still had tutti frutti. It has mixed fruit like pineapple, cherry, and banana in it and it's really good. It's almost like you get a surprise in every bite, kinda like this song. It starts with scat-like singing, and this is scattered all throughout the song as well. It has a very upbeat sound and there is a piano riff in the background that reminds me of an old-school jukebox song. There are also drums as well that rely mostly on the cymbals, so that is prominently heard in the song. A saxophone shows up near the end of the song which was fitting to the theme as it was upbeat. The actual lyrics are mostly repeated but he talks about a couple of girls that drive him "almost" crazy. I can’t tell whether he means it as a good or bad thing, but he does say that they ...

Mambo Italiano - Rosemary Clooney

Image
It's always a little hard to understand a song's intentions but I believe that this song was poking a little bit of fun. I think the meaning overall was just to get people up and moving and It does push a stress-free idea. The lyrics do tend to repeat quite a bit but it seems that they keep talking about stopping what you are doing, letting go, and dancing. Rosemary Clooney sang the song however, I am pretty sure she is not Italian so I think the writer picked her to sing this song because it showcased her vocal abilities. I love that the brass comes in at the end of each phrase to create an emphasis on the ending. Also, It is mostly Clooney singing and there are not really a lot of instruments except for percussion and some brass. It's not like most of today's music that relies on a variety of instruments and vocal backing. There is also the genre of computer-generated melodies (a.k.a techno songs). I think this song was meant to showcase Clooney's true singing tal...

Waiting For a Train - Jimmy Rodgers

Image
Waiting For a Train “Waiting for a train” sounds to be a very somber song. It starts with a single trumpet playing with what I believe to be a mute to create the jazz-like sound that helps create the somber feel. There are only two paragraphs of lyrics but those two paragraphs evoke the same idea of the fact that this person has nothing and nowhere to go, but still is waiting for a train. The idea is that if they can’t figure out what or where to go, the only thing to do is wait for a train. To keep the hope alive that there is something on the end of that train ride to create a reason to keep going. The music and lyrics have the same relationship meaning that when the instrumental is repeated, the lyrics repeat as well. The recorded version also has a slight noise, an old-timey hum from what I think is just bad recording quality since this song is quite old. However, it helps show that this is an old song. As far as instruments breaking from their traditional roles, I think the ...

April Showers - Al Jolson

Image
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1Z0odJJj00 The song starts with a crescendo that gets lower in pitch until Jolson starts to sing. Through it, this creates a calming mood from this soft introduction. The instrumental echoes with the singer. As Al Jolson holds out his last words of the sentence, the instrumental echos and holds out a note after. I was a little surprised to read the lyrics and fully understand what Jolson is singing about. He is singing about the fact that after a bad event, there is always good that comes from it so we should focus on the silver linings.  I don’t think that any instruments stray from the normal role, however, it was interesting to hear the strings echo with the singer and it sounds like the strings are singing as well.  My favorite part of this song is definitely the beginning because It sets the mood and also reminds me of the movie “White Christmas” with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. However, I think “White Christmas” premiered abo...

A little chirp about me

Hello, my name is Aspen! I am a freshman at SUU. My initial goal was to study engineering however, I am leaning back to music after a few years of taking a break. My goal is to switch my major to commercial music next year. I have so many favorite artists, but a classic is always Willie Nelson.
